James Gunn recently addressed speculation about Emilia Harcourt’s potential as Peacewrecker in the DCU’s Peacemaker series. He spoke about the topic during an interview on The Morning After Pod: Phase Hero’s Peacemaker Podcast.
Could Emilia Harcourt be Peacewrecker in DCU’s Peacemaker?
During the discussion, Brandon Davis on The Morning After Pod asked Gunn whether Jennifer Holland’s Harcourt could become “Peacewrecker outright.” Gunn responded, “I think you would have a very hard time ever getting Emilia to wear a costume,” referencing an earlier dialogue in the season where Harcourt dismissed the idea of suiting up as “stupid.”
Gunn explained that in the DC Universe, characters need specific motivations for donning costumes, citing Superman and other heroes who have narrative reasons. He contrasted this with characters like Judo Master, who continue to wear costumes without explanation, implying eccentricity rather than purpose.
Gunn noted, “In DC, it’s like people put on a costume, they have to have a reason for it,” emphasizing that Harcourt’s trajectory differs from traditional costumed characters.
Harcourt’s emotional arc has been a central part of Peacemaker Season 2, particularly in Episode 6’s pivotal scene with John Cena’s Peacemaker. Gunn highlighted her vulnerability, saying, “She thinks she’s so worthless that she thinks she’s sparing John her,” while also stressing that her story explores acceptance of love and self-worth. This focus suggests her development centers more on personal growth than adopting an alter ego like Peacewrecker.
Gunn indicated in the podcast that the show teased the “Peacewrecker” title as a joke rather than a concrete plan, keeping Harcourt’s role grounded in her established dynamic with Peacemaker and the larger DCU narrative. He stated, “She would have to be a different person” to fully take on that mantle.
Although the concept of Harcourt becoming Peacewrecker surfaced on screen and in interviews, Gunn addressed the idea directly. He clarified that current DCU plans make the transformation unlikely.
