The Young and the Restless just brought back one of its most dangerous characters, Matt Clark. Sharon and Nick were shocked to see him alive after believing he died in 2001. Now, head writer and executive producer Josh Griffith reveals why he decided to resurrect Matt and what his terrifying agenda really is against Sharon, Nick, and their son Noah.

While speaking with Soap Opera Digest, Josh Griffith shared that reviving Matt Clark was all about crafting a dark and suspenseful storyline centered on Sharon and Nick. “I wanted to do a big suspense story with Sharon and Nick at the center of it. That was the first thought process,” he stated.
Griffith shared that his goal was to craft a classic noir-style story that took the characters beyond Genoa City. The idea led him to revive Matt Clark, and he imagined Matt surviving and living under a new identity, Mitch Bacall, in Los Angeles.
“I thought, ‘Okay, let’s say he came back to life and created a new persona,” he explained. The idea clicked when he connected Matt to Noah, who had been living in London, running his own club.
To add more intrigue, Griffith introduced Matt’s wife, Sienna, creating a romantic twist. “I wanted that to be the sort of mysterious, romantic element of it,” he said. The plot thickened when Noah Newman’s affair with Sienna led to a car accident, a setup that reignited Matt’s old rage toward the Newman family.
Griffith revealed that Matt’s new obsession is all about revenge. But Matt’s plan doesn’t go as expected. He thought Noah would die in the crash and that Nick and Sharon would arrive broken.
“What he didn’t bank on was Noah surviving the accident. Because by Noah surviving the accident, he knew at that point he probably was about to lose Sienna forever, and that just enraged him,” he revealed.
Matt also discovered that Sharon was no longer the same woman he once tormented. “That is definitely a surprise for him,” Griffith noted. He added that Sharon’s strength will shine through.
“Anybody who thinks Sharon is not going to stand up to this son of a b—h, watch this week,” he said. While both Sharon and Nick confront Matt, Griffith teased, “Really, the protagonist/antagonist battle is coming down to Nick and Matt.”
Sharon and Nick think escaping California would end their ordeal, but Matt follows them to Genoa City, bringing chaos to the Newman family.
