Dan Trachtenberg opened up about how the Duffer brothers ended up making a cameo in his upcoming sci-fi film Predator: Badlands. The director said he planned to direct the third episode of Stranger Things Season 5 but later withdrew when scheduling conflicts with his Predator sequel arose. Netflix had publicly announced Trachtenberg’s involvement in June 2023, a year after Prey premiered to strong reception on Hulu.
How the Duffer brothers got to cameo in Predator: Badlands
When asked about the Duffer brothers’ link to Predator: Badlands, Dan Trachtenberg said their voice cameo let them still collaborate. He said it came together after his exit from Stranger Things due to overlapping schedules.
“So I was actually supposed to do an episode of Stranger Things, the third episode, and had started work on it and then this movie got greenlit,” he told ScreenTime / Dexerto. “But with the two things happening at the same time, I could not so I had to bow out.”
The director shared that he invited the Duffers to record a short part for the film. “I just thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to have you guys cameo on the movie?’ And they were super awesome about it, very much, like, nervous about not being performers,” Trachtenberg recalled.
He confirmed that the brothers lent their voices to the Yautja ship, speaking in the alien language created for the franchise. “I was like, ‘It’s okay, we’re gonna make it sound like a computer’ and they literally got the Duffers to speak in Yautja. It was so fun.”
Trachtenberg, known for Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers, said the collaboration gave them a way to work together indirectly. It also allowed both projects to move forward smoothly while maintaining their respective production schedules.
Predator: Badlands continues his work in the iconic sci-fi franchise under 20th Century Studios.
