General Hospital’s fan-favorite character Rocco has faced a challenging storyline in recent episodes. According to Andrew Hawkes, however, the character’s situation could have been significantly different. Hawkes discussed the storyline during an appearance on State of Mind, hosted by Maurice Benard.
Andrew Hawkes details crazy Rocco arc that was abandoned in General Hospital
General Hospital featured a storyline in which Rocco shot WSB director Cullum. Although Cullum survived the shooting, the incident altered the direction of Rocco’s story.
However, according to Andrew Hawkes, who portrays Cullum, the original plan for the storyline was different. Hawkes revealed that Cullum was initially supposed to die. This had to be a development that would have had greater consequences for both characters.
During his recent appearance on Maurice Benard’s State of Mind, Hawkes discussed his time on the show. He revealed that producers originally planned for him to remain part of the cast for only a short period.
“When I finally saw my first two episodes,” Hawkes shared with Benard, “I was just like, ‘I want to die. I’m the worst actor on the face of the earth.’ I told my wife, Sasha. I started filming like December 2nd, and then we filmed up till the 18th where the Christmas break was. And I kept saying to her, ‘Well, listen. I just want you to know, do not be surprised, because they’re probably going to call and fire me tonight.”
He continued, “I’m like, ‘They’re going to fire me over the weekend. So, you know, put a hold on Christmas, okay? I just don’t want you to be surprised when that happens because it’s going to happen.”
However, Hawkes remained with the show, and the storyline developed differently than originally planned.
“I was supposed to be on for like two months,” he explained. “And I was supposed to die when I was shot by Rocco on the pier. They’ve kept me around, and it’s been so amazing.”
According to Hawkes’ comments, the original plan involved Cullum dying after the shooting. That outcome would likely have created additional consequences for Rocco within the storyline. However, the show ultimately chose a different direction, allowing both characters to remain part of the ongoing narrative.
The storyline remains active on General Hospital.
