Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster have reportedly locked in their leading man for Paranormal Activity 8. The next installment of the found-footage titan also has a release date. The studio partnership views the untitled sequel as a priority project, aiming to reignite a franchise that reshaped modern horror economics.
New Paranormal Activity movie adds Chase Yi in first major casting announcement
The role goes to Chase Yi, an actor who has built his resume across prestige comedy series. Deadline reported and confirmed the casting. Yi appeared on Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest and has featured as a guest on Hacks, High Potential, and Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal.
Canadian filmmaker Ian Tuason will direct Paranormal Activity 8. Tuason broke through with Undertone, an A24 release that got critical acclaim for atmospheric tension. Now, he inherits a franchise that Oren Peli launched from a suburban San Diego house in 2007, turning a $15,000 investment into a $193 million global phenomenon two years later.
Paramount will reportedly release Paranormal Activity 8 on May 21, 2027. The studio co-finances and produces alongside Blumhouse Atomic Monster, retaining worldwide distribution rights. Storyline and character breakdowns remain unannounced, though the production promises fidelity to the found-footage format that audiences have rewarded with over $900 million in cumulative ticket sales across seven installments.
The 2009 original did more than mint profit. It revived the found-footage subgenre that had largely lain dormant since The Blair Witch Project a decade earlier, spawning a wave of imitators and establishing Blumhouse’s low-budget, high-return production model. Seven films later, the series has demonstrated unusual staying power for a format critics routinely declare exhausted.
Chase Yi arrives at the franchise carrying comedy credentials rather than a horror pedigree, a casting pattern that served earlier instalments well. The original Paranormal Activity drew much of its dread from performers who felt like real people caught in impossible circumstances, not polished genre veterans telegraphing terror.
Whether Tuason’s vision follows that blueprint or charts new territory remains unanswered as the 2027 release window approaches.
